Lost is the way is a newsletter for technology leaders navigating uncertain times. With AI as an obvious catalyst - though not the whole story - every day presents new risks and opportunities.

I started this newsletter because I kept having conversations about how people felt powerless to predict the change that is coming and are unsure what they should be doing. I can’t predict what’s coming either, but I thrive in ambiguity and uncertainty - for me it levels the playing field. When everything is uncertain, experience matters less than adaptability and experimentation.

I’ve spent a few decades working in both technical and leadership roles through uncertain times. I’ve worked at large and small companies. I’ve worked on ambiguous challenges, with teams of people who were brilliant at solving problems when provided just a little bit of direction. This newsletter is about trying to crystallize some of my thoughts on what I’ve learned.

While I focus primarily on technology leaders, I believe any engineer harnessing AI must learn to lead, communicate, and evaluate performance.

A lot of what you will read here is going to sound like normal “leadership stuff” - it is. Leading through ambiguity is just leading, but as a leader you also need to know where you are going, and my goal is to help you. When the success of others is on your shoulders you can feel tremendous pressure to have the answers, to be confident, and to lend others the confidence they need to move forward.

So as you look around, who is lending you confidence? Who is your thought partner on this journey? Who is helping you challenge your own thinking and evolve your operating model? If you want that support, hopefully I can help.

Reach out and tell me about your biggest uncertainty right now. Subscribe to get weekly strategies for thriving in ambiguity.

Thanks,

Aaron
